iOS 7 Calendar: Switching to List View
iOS 7 redesigned the Calendar app with a new interface, and finding the list view (a chronological list of all events) isn’t immediately obvious. Here’s how to access it and make the most of the Calendar app.
Access List View in iOS 7
- Open the Calendar app
- Tap the list icon (three horizontal lines with dots) in the top toolbar
- The view switches to show all upcoming events in a scrollable chronological list
The list view groups events by date, making it easy to scan your schedule quickly without switching between day or month views. You can scroll through weeks and months of events in one continuous list.
Switching Between Views
iOS 7 Calendar offers three main views:
- Year — Full year overview showing months. Tap a month to zoom in to month view.
- Month — Shows dots on each day indicating events. Tap a day to see its events.
- Day/List — Toggle between a day timeline and a full chronological event list using the list icon in the toolbar.
To switch between year, month, and day views, pinch outward to zoom in (year to month, month to day) or pinch inward to zoom out. The gesture-based navigation was new in iOS 7.
Search for Events
To find specific events across all dates:
- Open the list view
- Tap the Search field at the top
- Type an event name, location, attendee name, or notes content
- Matching events appear in real-time as you type
Search works across all calendars and looks at event titles, locations, notes, and attendee names.
iOS Calendar Tips and Tricks
Create a new event quickly:
- Tap the + button in the top right corner
- In day view, tap and hold on an empty time slot to create an event at that time
- Siri: “Create a meeting with John tomorrow at 3pm”
Move events by dragging:
- In day view, tap and hold an event block, then drag it to a new time
- Drag to the edges of the screen to scroll to adjacent days
Change event duration:
- Tap the event, then tap Edit
- Adjust the start and end times using the scroll wheels
Respond to invitations:
- Events with invitation status show an inbox icon
- Tap the event to accept, decline, or mark as tentative
Managing Multiple Calendars
If you have several calendars (work, personal, shared, subscribed):
- Tap Calendars at the bottom of the screen
- Check or uncheck calendars to show or hide them
- Each calendar can have a different color for easy identification
- Tap the i button next to a calendar to change its color or sharing settings
Hidden calendars don’t appear in any view — list, day, or month. This is useful for temporarily hiding a busy shared calendar when you need to focus on your own schedule.
Calendar Sync and Accounts
Add calendar accounts in Settings:
- Go to Settings → Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Tap Add Account
- Choose your provider (iCloud, Google, Yahoo, Outlook)
- Enable the Calendars toggle for that account
For Google Calendar specifically, use the Google account option (not CalDAV) for the best sync experience. Changes sync bidirectionally within seconds over Wi-Fi.
How Calendar Changed in Later iOS Versions
The list view location has shifted across iOS versions:
- iOS 7: List icon in top toolbar
- iOS 8-12: Dedicated search/list tab at the bottom navigation bar
- iOS 13-16: List view accessible by tapping the list icon or swiping in day view
- iOS 17+: Integrated into the main view with a toggle, plus natural language event creation
Despite interface changes, the core functionality remains: a chronological list of all your events grouped by date, searchable and filterable by calendar.
Common Calendar Problems
Events not showing: Check that the calendar is enabled in the Calendars list. Also verify sync is working in Settings → Mail, Contacts, Calendars → Fetch New Data.
Duplicate events: This usually happens when the same calendar is synced through multiple accounts (e.g., both iCloud and Google syncing the same calendar). Remove the duplicate account.
Time zone issues: Go to Settings → General → Date and Time → Time Zone Override. Enable it and set your preferred time zone if you travel frequently and need events to show in a consistent time zone.
Quick Reference
- Tap the list icon for chronological event view
- Pinch to zoom between year, month, and day views
- Use Search to find events by name or location
- Manage calendars by tapping Calendars at the bottom
- Add accounts in Settings → Mail, Contacts, Calendars
