Setting Up POP3 and IMAP on Nokia E71
The Nokia E71 includes native POP3 and IMAP support without requiring additional messaging apps. This guide covers manual configuration of both protocols with modern best practices.
Initial Setup
Navigate to Menu → Communic. → Messaging → Options → Settings → E-mail → Options → New mailbox → Start.
When prompted “Allow connection?”, select NO. This prevents automatic Nokia Messaging installation, which you want to avoid if using the native email client.
Enter your credentials:
- E-mail address: Your full email address
- Username: Your email username (often the part before @domain, though some providers use the full address)
- Password: Your account password
The device will indicate it cannot auto-configure and prompt you to manually select a protocol.
Choosing POP3 vs IMAP
POP3: Downloads messages to your phone and typically removes them from the server. Use this if you:
- Access email from only one device
- Want all messages stored locally
- Have limited server storage
IMAP: Keeps messages on the server and syncs across devices. Use this if you:
- Check email from multiple devices or webmail
- Need consistent folder structure everywhere
- Want to preserve messages on the server
Modern email usage almost always favors IMAP due to its multi-device sync capability.
Server Configuration
IMAP Settings
- Incoming mail server: Usually
imap.yourdomain.com - Port: 993 (SSL/TLS, recommended) or 143 (unencrypted)
- Security: Enable SSL/TLS
- Username: Your email address or username (verify with your provider)
- Password: Your account password
POP3 Settings
- Incoming mail server: Usually
pop3.yourdomain.com - Port: 995 (SSL/TLS, recommended) or 110 (unencrypted)
- Security: Enable SSL/TLS
- Username: Your email address or username
- Password: Your account password
SMTP (Outgoing Mail)
- Server: Usually
smtp.yourdomain.com - Port: 587 (TLS with authentication, recommended) or 25 (legacy)
- Security: Enable TLS
- Authentication: Enabled
- Username: Your full email address
- Password: Your account password
Always use SSL/TLS ports (993 for IMAP, 995 for POP3, 587 for SMTP) when available. Unencrypted connections expose your credentials.
Authentication and Modern Email Providers
The Nokia E71 predates OAuth2 and may struggle with providers requiring modern authentication methods. For providers like Gmail:
- Enable “Less secure app access” in your Google account settings (if still available in your Gmail version)
- Generate an app-specific password: Use Google Account → Security → App passwords to create a device-specific password instead of your main account password
- Use the app-specific password in the E71’s configuration
This approach is more secure than enabling broad “less secure” access and prevents login failures due to authentication method mismatches.
Troubleshooting Connection Issues
Credentials failing: Double-check username and password. Many providers accept either your full email address or just the username portion — verify with their documentation.
Server not found: Confirm your email provider’s exact server addresses and ports. Check:
- Your provider’s support documentation
- Account settings within their webmail interface
- Support articles for “mail client setup” or “IMAP/POP3 settings”
Connection timeout: If you’re behind a firewall or restrictive network, port 587 for SMTP or port 993 for IMAP are less likely to be blocked than 25 or 110.
SSL/TLS errors: Ensure you’re using the correct secure ports. Port 143 and 110 are unencrypted — switch to 993 and 995 respectively if the server supports SSL/TLS.
Multi-Device Considerations
If you access the same email account from multiple devices (computer, phone, webmail), use IMAP. POP3 removes messages from the server by default, making them unavailable elsewhere. IMAP keeps everything server-side and syncs deletions, folders, and read status across all devices.
After configuration, test the connection. The device will verify settings before saving the account. Once confirmed, the native email client handles message retrieval and management without requiring additional software.

Hi there
I folow the steps you said but in the end dont show up the messange:
Unable to define account.Select e-mail application to define e-mail account.
The system creates automatically the account in pop3 and after that i cant change fromo pop3 to imap…
How i fix this? do you know??
Tanks
hi Riu!
i have a similar problem like your but the difference is instead of automatically creating the account in POP3, it sets it to IMAP and doesnt allow me to change it to POP3..
do you think it might be related to some internal email setting in the phone??
